Electronic Medical Record
The Electronic Medical Record (eMR) is a multi-year program to replace the paper medical record with an online record which tracks and details a patient's care during the time spent in hospital. The change to working in a digital environment will take place in a number of manageable phases and will be accompanied by support and training for all clinicians. The eMR will significantly improve the delivery and quality of patient care as well as streamline clinical workflow. Over the next three years, approximately 84,000 clinicians and scientific staff in up to 88 public hospitals in New South Wales will start using the eMR. The eMR is a key component of NSW Health's Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) Strategy and is aligned with the whole-of-government approach to information technology. |

A fully electronic record will be achieved in a number of phases in the coming years. The current phase provides an essential foundation enabling all clinicians to have access to the medical record browser. Future phases will add new applications replacing the paper content. A requirement for the eMR is to be able to access the system at the point of care. Considerable investment will be required to support mobile devices. |
